Kitchen tips bits – Why does everything taste of onion?
Kitchen tips to make life just that little bit easier…
This picture was never meant to be part of the blog. I took it today as a bit of practice food photography and as you can see, more work is needed! Note to self – don’t forget you cast a big shadow when the sun’s shining! So, while the picture itself isn’t great, I’ve learned something for next time AND, more importantly, it gave me another idea for a post…
Don’t you love it when you hear some simple tip that makes you wonder why on earth you hadn’t thought of it yourself? Well, my Mum gave me one the other day and I thought I’d pass it on. It’s pretty world shattering I think you’ll agree.
With alarming regularity, my son Jacob complains that his ham sandwich, or piece of cake or chopped apple tastes like onion. This isn’t because I’m trying a new sneaky way to get veggies into his diet but because I SO often use my chopping board after preparing the evening meal (chopping onions, garlic and the like) and forget to wipe it. I should add that I’m fastidious when it comes to cleaning after preparing raw meat etc. so please don’t fear too much for my family’s health! In fact, I find that with wooden chopping boards, the onion flavour eventually sinks in and is very tricky to completely wipe away.
Anyway, Mum was staying with me the other week and this little problem came up. She gave me such a simple solution – on one side of the board, use a permanent marker to write ‘onion’. Then just use that side for all your stinky, strong foods and the other for everything else. GENIUS!
So, now I’ve blown your mind I shall say toodle-pip until the next time.
