Food hugs #5 – Soup
“Beautiful Soup, so rich and green,
Waiting in a hot tureen!
Who for such dainties would not stoop?
Soup of the evening, beautiful Soup!
Soup of the evening, beautiful Soup”
(The Mock Turtle/Alice in Wonderland)
Soup really hits the spot when you’re feeling a little off colour. Perhaps you have a nasty cold or maybe you’ve over-indulged the night before. A steaming hot bowl of soup can help you to forget your aches and pains even if only for a few moments! It’s said that chicken soup or ‘Jewish Penicillin’ actually contains properties that are good for curing a cold. What more excuse could you need?
Comforting AND Healthy?
This is the only comfort food on my list that is actually healthy for you (hurrah!) and sometimes that’s just what we need. I know if I’ve had a few heavy nights and I’m feeling run down then what really boosts my body and spirit is food that feels like it’s doing me good. It has to be flavourful, mind – a bowl of lettuce is NOT going to cut it.
Some great soups to try…
One of my favourite soups (and a seasonal one at the moment) is Jamie’s tomato soup from his book ‘Jamie’s 30 Minute Meals‘. It has a kick of chilli which is warming and comforting in itself and it contains a whole kilo of tomatoes for just 4 servings so you KNOW it’s going to do you good! My hubby, Nick was out on the town last night so I’ll be making it for his lunch today – with our own tomatoes so it feels even better!
If you’re feeling in need extra comfort in the form of carbs then why not give this bread a go?
